In the UK, translation is an unregulated profession, meaning that anyone can hold themselves out as a translator.  Naturally, you need to be certain of the abilities of the person to whom you are entrusting the translation of your precious legal documents.  So what should you be looking for?

While qualifications and memberships don't tell the whole story, they do demonstrate a commitment to the profession and to upholding its high standards and values. I am proud to have achieved the following credentials:

Postgraduate diploma in Legal Translation (distinction)

1st class BA (Hons) degree in Modern Languages
Qualified Member of the Institute of Translation and Interpreting (MITI)
Member of the Chartered Institute of Linguists (MCIL)
Chartered Linguist (CL)
Member (entry-level) of Chartered Institute of Editing and Proofreading
Member of Mediterranean Editors and Translators
The Law Society (non-practising solicitor)
ISO 17100:2015 qualified status

You can be confident that your legal translation work is in safe and competent hands with me.
